South African Wine
South Africa is the world’s 8th largest wine producer and generally produces around 4% of the world’s wine. According to Tim Atkin, South Africa’s white wines are some of the best in the world. And to quote from the book Rooiwyn in Suid-Afrika (published in 1971): “Suid-Afrika is een van die min plekke op aarde wat Rooiwyn van gehalte kan lewer” (South Africa is one of the few places on earth that can produce quality red wine). It may be a bit biased, but the South African red wines are in no way inferior to the best in the world.
Grape varietals
Although the Cape winelands are still dominated by Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc for white wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinotage for the reds, Cape producers are gradually embracing and experimenting with more diverse grape varieties.
Grapes such as Albariño, Verdelho, Touriga Nacional and Assyrtiko to name a few, add diversity to the South African wine scene.
Winegrowing regions
The heart of the South African wine industry is the Cape Winelands with their amazing diversity of terrain, Mediterranean climate, range of altitudes and varied soils.
