The Cape winegrowing areas, situated in the narrow viticultural zone of the southern hemisphere, mainly have a Mediterranean climate and the mountain slopes and valleys form the ideal habitat for the wine grape <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitis_vinifera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vitis vinifera<\/a><\/em>, the products of which have given pleasure to man for many centuries. Long, sun-drenched summers and mild, wet winters contribute to the ideal conditions for viticulture at the Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cape winelands stretch from the rugged mountains and multi-directional slopes of the coastal region to the open plains of the Klein Karoo where viticulture takes place mainly in the riverine valleys. South Africa&#8217;s vineyards are mostly situated in the Western Cape near the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country\u2019s wine regions are organized under a Wine of Origin (WO) scheme, which sees its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary in 2023. Under the auspices of the WO Scheme, production zones are divided into officially demarcated geographical units, regions, districts and wards. There are five regions in the geographical unit of the Western Cape \u2013 Breede River Valley, Cape South Coast, Coastal Region, Klein Karoo and Olifants River. Another five geographical units exist: Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Northern Cape. Stellenbosch is still the largest grape-growing area, followed closely by Paarl.
